No English, No Wheels: Trump Cracks Down on Truckers’ Language Skills

On April 28, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating the enforcement of an existing federal regulation requiring commercial truck drivers to demonstrate English-language proficiency. This regulation, previously under-enforced, is now being emphasized to enhance road safety by ensuring that drivers can effectively communicate with law enforcement and understand road signs and signals.

The Department of Transportation's rule stipulates that commercial drivers must be able to read English, converse with the public, comprehend highway signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports or records. While this regulation has been in effect for nearly 40 years, enforcement has varied over time.

The Small Business in Transportation Coalition (SBTC) has advocated for stricter enforcement of this rule, citing safety concerns. They have urged the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to place drivers who do not meet English proficiency standards out of service.

This renewed focus on English proficiency in the trucking industry aligns with broader policy shifts following President Trump's March 1 executive order declaring English the official language of the United States. While this declaration does not mandate changes in services provided by agencies, it underscores the administration's emphasis on English proficiency in various sectors.

The trucking industry is now adjusting to these changes, with stakeholders monitoring the implementation and potential impacts on drivers and operations.

Conclusion

For truck drivers across America, this renewed focus on English proficiency isn’t just about policy — it’s about safety, communication, and opportunity. Whether you're a seasoned road warrior or just getting started, being able to speak and understand English can open doors, prevent misunderstandings, and protect lives on the road. Now more than ever, drivers should invest in their communication skills to stay compliant, competitive, and confident behind the wheel. The road ahead is changing — make sure you're ready to roll with it.
