The refrigerated trucking ("reefer") sector is undergoing significant transformation in 2025. Technological advancements, such as the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, have made real-time monitoring of cargo conditions standard practice. Advanced telematics systems now allow fleet operators to track temperature, humidity, and door activity, ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards and reducing cargo spoilage risks.

Regulatory pressures are also shaping the industry. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) continues to influence how carriers handle and transport perishable goods, requiring detailed documentation and strict temperature controls. Additionally, new emissions standards, like California's Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) regulation, are pushing fleets to adopt zero-emission vehicles .
Despite these advancements, challenges persist. The driver shortage remains a critical issue, and the costs associated with adopting new technologies and complying with regulations are rising. Infrastructure gaps, particularly in charging stations for electric vehicles, also pose significant barriers to adoption.
